Math 20500: Elements of Calculus

Limits, derivatives, rules of differentiation, differentials, graph sketching, maximum and minimum problems, related rates, exponential and logarithmic functions, differential equations, anti-derivatives, area, volume, applications to economics. This course is intended for Biology and Economics majors. Prereq.: grade of C or higher in Math 19500 or placement by the Department. Credit will be given for only one of the following courses: Math 20100 or 20500. Please note that a grade of C or better in 20500 is a prerequisite for Math 20900. 4 hr./wk.; 4 cr.

Welcome to Elements of Calculus!

In this course, you will develop the foundational concepts and techniques of applied calculus. You will study functions, limits, derivatives, and integrals, with an emphasis on interpreting and applying these ideas to problems in business, economics, the social sciences, and other fields. Through regular practice, you will strengthen your algebraic and problem-solving skills while learning how calculus can be used to analyze change, optimize quantities, and model real-world situations. The goal of the course is to build both your computational proficiency and your understanding of the practical applications of calculus.
