MyOpenMath and Written Homework
There are two different types of homework in MATH 205:
- MyOpenMath Homework — online homework completed directly in MyOpenMath.
- MATH 205 Written Homework — written assignments that require you to show your mathematical work and submit your completed assignment as a PDF through MyOpenMath.
How to Enroll in MyOpenMath
Go to myopenmath.com.
If you already have a MyOpenMath account, log in using your existing username and password.
If you do not have a MyOpenMath account, click Register as a new student.
When creating a new account, use your CUNY EMPLID as your username.
Create a password, enter an email address, and complete the required registration fields.
Enter the Course ID and Enrollment Key provided by your instructor.
Click Sign Up to enroll in the course.

If you have a question or encounter a problem with a MyOpenMath assignment, use the Message Instructor button in MyOpenMath to contact your instructor or the Math Student Help Desk.
MyOpenMath Homework
MyOpenMath Homework is completed online directly through the MyOpenMath system.
These assignments are designed to provide regular practice with the concepts, techniques, and applications covered in MATH 205.
You are responsible for:
- checking the MyOpenMath calendar regularly;
- completing each assignment before its posted deadline;
- completing all required problems;
- reviewing the feedback provided by MyOpenMath;
- keeping track of upcoming deadlines; and
- contacting your instructor promptly if you believe there is a problem with a homework question.
You should not wait until immediately before the deadline to begin an assignment.
Technical problems, internet problems, forgotten passwords, computer problems, or other last-minute difficulties do not automatically extend a homework deadline.
If you believe a MyOpenMath problem is not working correctly, use the Message Instructor button associated with the problem so that the specific question can be identified and reviewed.
Written Homework Assignments
What Are the Written Homework Assignments?
In addition to the online MyOpenMath Homework, you will complete Written Homework Assignments during the semester.
Written Homework is designed to assess more than whether you can obtain the correct final answer.
These assignments give you an opportunity to demonstrate that you can:
- set up a problem correctly;
- select and apply an appropriate mathematical method;
- show the important steps in your solution;
- use correct mathematical notation;
- organize calculations clearly;
- create and interpret graphs, tables, or other mathematical representations when required;
- interpret your results in the context of an application; and
- communicate mathematical reasoning clearly and completely.
Written Homework Assignments are separate from the online MyOpenMath Homework.
How to Get the Weekly Written Homework
A new MATH 205 Written Homework Assignment will be available at the beginning of each week in NAC 1/511.
You are responsible for picking up your Written Homework Assignment each week.
You should pick up the assignment as early in the week as possible so that you have enough time to:
- read the assignment carefully;
- complete the required problems;
- ask questions if you do not understand a problem;
- receive tutoring or other academic support if needed;
- check your work; and
- scan and submit the assignment before the deadline.
Do not wait until the day the assignment is due to pick up your Written Homework Assignment.
Each Written Homework Assignment will contain the problems you are required to complete and the space needed to show your mathematical work.
All work must be completed on the Written Homework Assignment sheet unless your instructor specifically gives different instructions.
Completing the Written Homework
Complete every assigned problem directly on the Written Homework Assignment sheet.
For each problem, you should:
- show all necessary mathematical work;
- clearly identify formulas, equations, or methods being used;
- show the important steps in your calculations;
- use correct mathematical notation;
- simplify your work appropriately;
- clearly indicate your final answer;
- include appropriate units when required;
- label graphs, tables, axes, or diagrams when appropriate; and
- answer interpretation or application questions using complete statements when appropriate.
Unless otherwise stated, submitting only a final answer is not considered a complete solution.
Your instructor must be able to follow your reasoning from the work you submit.
Work that is incomplete, disorganized, or missing necessary steps may lose credit even if the final answer is correct.
How to Complete and Submit a Written Homework Assignment
Pick up the week's Written Homework Assignment from NAC 1/511 at the beginning of the week.
Read the entire assignment carefully before beginning.
Complete every assigned problem directly on the Written Homework Assignment sheet, unless your instructor gives different instructions.
Show all necessary mathematical work.
Make sure your work is organized so that your instructor can clearly follow how you obtained each answer.
Before submitting, check that:
every required problem has been attempted;
- all necessary steps and supporting work are shown;
- final answers are clearly identified;
- units are included when appropriate;
- graphs, tables, and diagrams are labeled when required;
- all work is written in the appropriate workspace;
- your handwriting is readable; and
every page of the assignment is complete.
Scan the entire completed Written Homework Assignment into one clear PDF file.
Make sure that:
every page is included;
- the pages are arranged in the correct order;
- every page is upright;
- no part of your work has been cut off;
- your handwriting and calculations are clearly readable; and
the PDF opens correctly.
Save your PDF using the following file-name format:
LastName_EMPLID.pdf
For example, a student named Maria Smith with EMPLID 12345678 should save the file as:
Smith_12345678.pdf
Upload the PDF to the corresponding Written Homework Assignment in MyOpenMath before the posted deadline.
After uploading your assignment, open or preview your submitted file.
Confirm that:
you uploaded the correct assignment;
- every page is included;
- the pages are in the correct order;
- every page can be opened;
- every page is readable; and
- MyOpenMath shows that your submission was successfully received.
Important Written Homework Submission Requirements
Written Homework Assignments will be available at the beginning of each week in NAC 1/511.
You are responsible for picking up the assignment each week.
Written Homework Assignments must be submitted by the deadline listed in MyOpenMath.
All required problems must be attempted.
All necessary mathematical work must be shown.
A submission containing only final answers may receive little or no credit.
Complete your work on the official Written Homework Assignment sheet unless your instructor specifically gives you permission to use additional paper.
If additional pages are permitted, clearly write your name and EMPLID on each additional page.
Additional pages must be included in the same PDF as the rest of the assignment.
Submit the entire completed assignment as one PDF file.
Do not submit separate photographs, individual image files, or multiple PDF files unless specifically instructed to do so.
Pages must be upright and arranged in the correct order.
Make sure your entire solution is visible in the scan.
Missing pages, unreadable work, incorrectly oriented pages, cropped work, or submission of the wrong file may result in lost credit.
You are responsible for confirming that your assignment was successfully uploaded to MyOpenMath before the deadline.
Uploading a file does not guarantee that the correct file was submitted.
Always open or preview your submission after uploading it.
Keep your original Written Homework Assignment after submitting it in case there is a question about your uploaded work or grade.
Quality of Written Work
Written Homework is intended to develop your ability to communicate mathematical ideas clearly.
Your work should be organized so that another person can understand your reasoning without having to guess what you did.
For example, you should avoid submitting work that consists only of:
- disconnected calculations;
- unexplained numbers;
- calculator output without supporting work;
- unlabeled graphs;
- answers without units when units are required; or
- final answers with no indication of how they were obtained.
Good written mathematical work should show a clear progression from the information given in the problem to the final answer.
When appropriate, you should explain what your final answer means in the context of the problem.
Academic Expectations for Written Homework
Written Homework is intended to demonstrate your own mathematical understanding.
You may use your class notes, course materials, MyOpenMath resources, and other resources permitted by your instructor to help you understand the material.
However, the work you submit must represent your own understanding of the problems.
You should be able to explain the reasoning and calculations contained in your submitted work.
Submitting another student's work, copying another student's solutions, or submitting work that you cannot explain may constitute an academic integrity violation.
Your goal is not simply to produce an answer. Your goal is to demonstrate that you understand the mathematics used to obtain that answer.
Before You Submit: Final Checklist
Before uploading your Written Homework, check each of the following:
- Did I complete every required problem?
- Did I show enough work for someone to understand my reasoning?
- Did I clearly identify my final answers?
- Did I include units where appropriate?
- Did I label graphs, tables, axes, and diagrams where required?
- Is my work readable and organized?
- Did I scan every page of the assignment?
- Are all pages upright?
- Are the pages in the correct order?
- Is any part of my work cut off?
- Did I save the entire assignment as one PDF?
- Did I use the required file name?
- Did I upload the correct PDF to MyOpenMath?
- Did I open or preview my submission afterward?
- Can every page of the submitted PDF be read clearly?
You are responsible for making sure your submitted Written Homework Assignment is complete, correct, readable, and successfully uploaded before the deadline.
