Math 18500: Basic Ideas in Mathematics

Problem solving, sets, operations with sets, functions, numerical systems with different bases, topics in number theory, probability and geometry. Includes writing exercises and collaborative work. This course is for potential education majors only. Prereq.: C or better in Math 18000 or placement by the department.4 hr./wk.; 3 cr.

The above description is what appears in the college bulletin, however the material on problem solving, sets, operations with sets, numerical systems with different bases, and topics in number theory is now covered in Math 18000. This course still contains the topics functions, probability and geometry mentioned above, but now in a more comprehensive way, including more advanced algebra. Statistics has been and continues to be included. Currently, this is no longer a stand alone course and both Math 18000 and 18500 must be taken in order to cover all the content material needed for childhood/elementary education.
