Abstract

All known results about solvability of equations in infinite groups may be classified into two major trends: groups with relations of abelian type (e.g. niplotent groups) or groups which are close to free (e.g. word hyperbolic groups). In this talk, an algorithm will be presented which detects solvability of quadratic equations in the Grigorchuk group. This may be a starting point to study equations in other branch groups. This is joint work with A.Myasnikov and A.Ushakov.
