Finite presentations and long derived series

Abstract

While very complicated groups can be embedded in finitely presented groups, one intuitively feels finite presentability should impose other structural finiteness. This is particularly true of one-relator groups. We will discuss a number of examples and in particular construct finitely presented groups with long derived series.
