Abstract

Given an algebraic variety X, a fundamental problem in geometry is to characterize the subvarieties of X. In this talk, I will introduce a geometric invariant known as the Chow group, the group generated by subvarieties up to algebraic deformation. I will give two examples of interesting geometric problems that have been solved using Chow groups and discuss some difficult open questions in the computation of the Chow group.
