Abstract
This talk will introduce you to the study of groups acting on
the circle and connections with fundamental problems in dynamics,
topology, and group theory. Part of the beauty in this subject is
that it is at once simple and profound. Assuming no background
knowledge (you'll survive if you know what a group is and what the
circle is), I'll describe some recent discoveries, highlight common
themes (namely, rigidity) and give some new perspectives on open
problems.
This talk should be accessible and interesting to a broad
audience.
