Abstract
We will discuss motivation for studying GL(2,R) orbit closures of translation surfaces, and recent progress towards the long term goal of classification, including joint work with Maryam Mirzakhani.
The talk will serve as an elementary introduction to the study of dynamics on certain moduli spaces, and will also point out connections to other areas of mathematics, such as algebraic geometry, Teichmuller theory, ergodic theory on homogeneous spaces, and combinatorics.
