Abstract
The classical Hodge theorem is a highpoint in the interaction between topological invariants, analytic tools, and geometric structures. It is also the launchpad for a journey that leads to character varieties, local systems, and Higgs bundles. This talk will describe some of the sights along the route and discuss some of the outgrowths from the links between them.
