Abstract
The formation of pyramidlike structures and coarsening has been observed quite often in thin-film growth on substrates. We discuss coarsening for a model of epitaxial growth for isotropic systems with slope selection. The model is described by a 4th order PDE. Numerical simulations and experiments indicate that the coarsening exponent for this system is 1/3. We present a rigorous proof of a weak version of this statement. Coarsening of other energy-driven models will also be discussed briefly. The talk is based on joint work with Robert V. Kohn.
