Marshak Math/Physics Tutoring Center

Throughout this challenging time, the Division of Science/CCAPP Tutoring Support Office will be available remotely. For the Fall semester, tutors will be available from 12:00pm to 5:00pm on Mondays to Thursdays, and 12:00pm to 4:00pm on Fridays.

Students will be required to make an appointment to see a tutor using our Appointment-Plus platform. Students who have not used Appointment Plus before will need to create an account prior to making an appointment. Whether creating an account or making an appointment students must use their 'citymail' email address and a correct phone number.

STEP 2

Tutors will contact students via email at the appointment time and will provide a link to one of the following online Tutoring Platforms:

GoBoard - a free browser-based video conferencing tool that includes shared whiteboard functionality. This platform works best on a PC, a MAC or an iPad. It does not work on Android devices.

Zoom – Free for faculty, staff and students. Click here for a Zoom user guide.

We prefer to use GoBoard since its whiteboard functionality is superior to Zoom's, but if students cannot use GoBoard, we can still tutor using Zoom, Skype, Hangouts, phone calls, or even just exchanged email messages.

Note: We like to be able to see students during tutoring sessions - video gives us important feedback that we can't get from voice alone. So we prefer to keep cameras on, but it is by no means mandatory. If students don't want to be seen, for any reason at all, they are welcome to keep their camera off.

  • Note that the math/physics tutoring center will be closed whenever the college is closed or on recess. In general, the center follows the college's academic calendar, which can be found here.

Want to be a Math/Physics Tutor? Find the application here.

If you would like to become a math and/or physics tutor at the Marshak Math/Physics Tutoring Center, feel free to fill out an application (save as a word .docx document if given the option).

Please be aware that the requirements for becoming a tutor are strict. You must fulfill all the requirements for your desired position to be considered. Tutors who can tutor both math and physics are in higher demand.

Want to tutor, but can't tutor with us?

Sometimes, because of schedule or insufficient subject requirements, we may not be able to hire you as a tutor. But that does not mean you should give up on the dream of becoming one. There are many tutoring centers around campus that need motivated, proficient tutors--and they will often have less strict requirements.

  • The Grove School of Engineering has its own math, physics and engineering tutoring in Steinman 2M5.

  • The SEEK department in the NAC building often needs math tutors at all levels.

  • The math department has its own tutoring center for up to calculus 1. Click here for more info.

  • The AccessAbility center in the NAC needs tutors for all subjects.

  • If you'd like to tutor biology or chemistry, you can inquire at Marshak 1005.

  • Consult this page for more information on the various tutoring centers on campus.
