The Rich Summer Internship Program

The Rich Scholarship program support students in the advanced study of mathematics under faculty supervision during the Summer. Students wishing to pursue advanced study under supervision of CCNY Mathematics faculty, as well as faculty members from other institutions, should obtain a commitment from a faculty mentor before submitting their application.

Timing

The internship should last for 10 weeks in the summer.

Award

The award amount is $6,000 for ten weeks during the summer and will be given in two payments. The first payment will be made to awardees at the beginning of the program. At the conclusion of the internship, participants are expected to submit a written report approved by their mentor describing the nature of their summer work and summarizing their accomplishments. This report is due by August 22nd in the year of the internship. The second payment will be made after this report is submitted and only if the mentor confirms the awardee has met the expectations.

Faculty mentors will receive an honorarium.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must have been enrolled as students at CCNY during the academic year before the internship. Students who graduated in the previous fall semester, or are scheduled to graduate the spring before the internship can apply.
  2. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. A GPA of 3.5 or higher in advanced Math courses completed at CCNY is preferred.
  3. Applicants have to secure two letters of recommendation from CCNY faculty, at least one of whom must be from the Department of Mathematics.
  4. Applicants have to provide a paragraph describing what they will be studying under the supervision of their faculty mentor. Potential mentors must also submit a description of expectations of the student over the summer internship, as well as a brief project description.

Application forms

Application deadline and submission

You must submit your application by April 23rd in the spring before you hope to receive the internship.

To apply for the internship, submit the application together with any other documents required (as listed in the application form) to George Brathwaite via mathawards@ccny.cuny.edu or turn the application form in person to George Brathwaite in MR 529. Letters of recommendation and the mentorship form should also be sent to or given to Mr. Brathwaite.

Questions

Send application related questions to George Brathwaite via mathawards@ccny.cuny.edu. For other questions related to this scholarship program, send an email to Prof. Kucherenko.

Presentations

At the end of the internship and/or the following semester, interns will be encouraged to give short presentations on their work. Details forthcoming.

Previous recipients

We maintain a list of past internship projects. We'd also like to display any results, images, posters, etc, that interns would like to share. If you have something you would like to share, please email it to Prof. Hooper.

Meet the Platonic Solids: Dodecahedron

The dodecahedron

The Platonic solids have been known since antiquity, and they play a prominent role in Plato's description of the physical world. The planar faces of each solid are identical polygons. Only equilateral triangles, squares and regular pentagons appear.

Although the platonic solids seem to be purely geometric objects, they embody a number of deep algebraic features. Their symmetries, for example, relate to the solution of polynomial equations of low degree.
