Homework Assignments

  • Homework 1 (due 9/9/13): Do Ex. 0.1, Writing Assignments 1 and 2 on page 7, Ex. 0.3, Ex. 0.6.

  • Homework 2: Ex. 1.1.1 on page 14.

  • Homework 3: Ex. 1.1.2 on page 16.

  • Homework 4: Ex. 1.2.2, problems 1 and 3; Ex. 1.2.3; Ex. 1.2.4.

  • Homework 5: (due the first class after the test) Ex. 1.2.5, Ex. 1.2.6, Ex. 1.2.7.

  • Homework 6: Given two fractions a/b and c/d with a/b < c/d, and a,b,c,d > 0. Two ways (there are others) of finding a fraction in between them are: (1) Averaging, that is, the fraction (1/2)(a/b + c/d) is between them, and (2) Summing the numerators and denominators, that is, the fraction (a + c)/(b + d) are between them. Explain why this is so. Use a proof if necessary.

  • Homework 7: Ex. 1.3.1, Ex. 1.3.2, Ex. 1.3.3, Ex. 1.4.4 on page 39.

  • Homework 8: Ex. 2.1.1, Ex. 2.1.3, Ex. 2.1.4.

  • Homework 9: Ex. 2.3.1; Ex 2.3.2; Ex. 3.1.1. problem 1; Ex. 3.1.2 problems 1,3,5,6,7.

  • Homework 10: Geometry Section - Ex. 7.3 and Ex. 7.4

  • Homework 11: Geometry Section - Ex. 7.5, problems 5 - 16, Pythagoras' Theorem Sheet, problem 2.

  • Homework 12: Geometry Section - Ex. 7.6; Solid Geometry Sheet - all problems; Pythagoras' Theorem Sheet, problems 1,3,4,5,6.

Note: In general, there is no partial credit given on quizzes. You either get the right answer, or you don't. No in between. Partial credit will be offered on in-class exams only.
