**Course description:** This course will cover many of the basic
elements of calculus. The topics covered will span chapters 1 through 6
of our course's text (we will omit several sections of chapters 5 and
6). We will cover how to calculate derivatives using the limit
definition, differentiate algebraic, logarithmic, and exponential
functions, apply derivatives to a variety of different real world
problem types, anti-differentiate polynomial, logarithmic, and
exponential functions, and apply anti-differentiation to problems of
area.

This is a summer session, so the pace will be roughly double that of a
regular semester. In turn, this means students must be diligent with
their work, and it is encouraged that they take advantage of the office
hours or any other resources at CCNY to make sure they do not fall
behind.

**Course text:** *Brief Applied Calculus*, by James Stewart, Daniel
Clegg 1st Ed. (Chapters 1-6, skipping sections in chapters 5 and 6)

**Homework:** Completing the homework will be an essential part of
mastering the material of this course and doing well on exams. Each week
there will be two assignments: one due on Monday and one due on
Thursday. Throughout the semester these will make up 10% of a student's
grade, but their value to mastering the material is invaluable. They
will be graded on a 5 point scale, based on completion and accuracy. On
the submission date, the first 15 minutes of class will be dedicated to
homework review. If students had difficulties with any of the problems,
this gives them a chance to ask questions.

Additionally, each week there will be a short quiz at the beginning of
class on Thursday which will count towards a student's homework grade.
They will cover the material from the week, and will count as an
additional homework grade each week.

Homework should be submitted on Brightspace. Late homeworks will receive
an automatic 2 point deduction for each day late unless the student
requests and receives an extension prior to the due date. Email the
instructor if such an extension is needed.

**Exams:** There will be 3 exams through this course: 2 midterm exams
and 1 final exam. The midterms will each make up 25% of a student's
grade, while the final will count for 40%. The course website describes
the dates of each exam as well as what sections of our course book each
exam will cover. Emphasis is placed here that the final is comprehensive
and will test every skill from the semester.

**Attendance:** Attendance will be taken each class. If a student
accrues 5 unexcused absences, 10 points will be deducted from their
final grade, and an additional 10 points will be deducted for each
subsequent absence. This is a strict rule, but it should be emphasized
that to learn this material students must be in class and engaged.

If a student arrives more than 5 minutes late, then the attendance sheet
for the day will have already been collected. Hence they must speak to
the instructor either during the 10 minute break or after class to be
marked late. Three lates will convert to an absence, so it is important
to be on time.

**Final Grade:** Your final grade will be computed as follows:

- Homework 10%

- Midterm 1 25%

- Midterm 2 25%

- Final Exam 40%

**Make-up Exams:** Students who miss a major exam due to documented
illness, religious observance, or other legitimate emergencies should
contact the instructor as soon as possible. Religious accommodations for
exams will be honored according to CUNY policy.

- **AI Use** You may not submit anything created by AI as any part of
  any assignment

- You may work with others, but your homework must be written
  independently.
