NEW News
MATHS 19500, 20300 and 39200 students did well on First Test.
Math 39100 students did good; but not exceptionally well. FIX YOUR ALGEBRA PROBLEMS!
factor x^2 + x and D^2 + D the same way!
I spend a lot of my free time in the student Cafeteria hoping to help you with these issues. My office NAC6273 is a bit small to accommodate all of you at once. I find the cafeteria quite comforting (large tables and the internet is available.) and I do enjoy a good cheese burger, so come on down! (bring paper and pencil, your textbook, and a problem). If your problem is more mathematical and personal, then I can address it in my office. Just let me know!
SECOND TEST FOR EVERYONE (MATH 19500, MATH 39100, MATH 20300 and MATH 39200) WILL BE THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 16th THRU NOVEMBER 19TH (BE PREPARED!)
MATH 39500 COMPLEX VARIABLES FOR ENGINEERS OFFERED IN SPRING 2010 (PRE-REQUISITE: MATH 39100 with Grade C or Better)!
In Spring 2010. The Mathematics Department offers MATH 39500 (COMPLEX ANALYSIS FOR ENGINEERS). If you have already taken MATH 39100 (METHODS OF SOLVING ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS) and received a passing grade of C or better, then you are eligible to register for MATH 39500. Complex Variables is a beautiful subject in its own right. As engineering students, having some basic knowlegde of th e complex domain is valuable. In Math 39100 C I believe we saw some of the power of complex numbers. I have met students, taking ELECTROMAGNETICS FUNDAMENTALS and all they were using was complex numbers and GREEN's and Stokes' Theorems. So if you have the pre-requiste which is MATH 39100 then register in spring 2010 and let Prof Ethan AKIN (chairman of Mathematics) teach you how deep is the complex plane runs! (You should have a lot of fun too!). I loved this course as an Undergrad/Grad. (That's how I learned about GREEN's theorem in the plane)
OLD NEWS!
FIRST TEST FOR MATH 19500 WILL BE ON OCT 14, 2009 during class time.
First TEST FOR MATH 20300 WILL BE ON OCT 12, 2009 during class time.
Homework Problems for Math 39200: From the Textbook (Smith & Minton): Do the Even Numbered Exercises from among Problems 1 through 36 for Chapter 14.2 (LINE INTEGRALS).
Students Registered in Math 39100 Will have a first test Next Thursday. Test will cover only First Order O.D.E (separable, homogeneous, exact, integrating factor for linear eqnations.) and applications (Tank problems). Be sure that you understand each method. You may or may not be told which method to use!.
It is a good idea To study the Example Problems Problems provided for each Method discussed thus far.
Students Registered in Math 19500 and Math 20300 Homework is due every THURSDAY and MATLAB (Math 20300 only) is DUE every TUESDAY.
Math 19500 Students Be prepared for up coming Test on INEQUALITIES AND GRAPHING EQuation of LINES.
All students registered in math courses at CCNY (especially if you are in the ones for which I am instructing) should know immediately without saying that your home assignments consists of working out the exercises in your textbook. If you are a mathematics major, then you should take on some of the more challenging problems in order to further develop your mathematical maturity. However any student may take on more challenging problems in the textbook. (No looking up solutions is allowed. Your solution is what is important; not the books!) If you are stuck on a problem then come and see me! or address the problem in class at the board before your classmates (you must be prepare to take ownership of the problem). Click the link corresponding to your class to see any if there are any homework assignments to be turned in. Check your class site regularly!
Michael Jackson (a.k.a King of Pop) dies at age 50 just before start of final Concert!
MATHEMATICS TUTORING
I highly recommend that students registered in Math courses should seek tutoring no matter how well you think you are doing in class. Don't forget that understanding a problem is just as important as having an answer to the problem. Tutoring can help bridge the gap between these. Tutoring in Marshak is usually available by the third week of the semester or earlier. Look around for postings.
