Reviews for Tests

Test 1 Review

Go here to access the finals mentioned, and do the indicated problems.

  • Sp 2005: 2, 4, 11. For bonus points: you can try 1 (with the right side = 0), and 10(a).
  • Fa 2005: 2, 8. For bonus you can try 5 (ignore the part about the Wronskian).
  • Sp 2006: 1, 2, 3, 9. For bonus you can try 4(a), 5, and 14.
  • Fa 2006: 1, 2(a), 3(a), 8, 12 (they told you it's homogeneous. That's way too nice. I won't give you such info.). For bonus you can try 11(a).
  • Sp 2011: 1, 2(a), 5, 7(a) (hint: use an appropriate substitution--we'll look at a different way to solve this kind of problem in chapter 4).
  • Fa 2011: 1, 2(a), 5.

For topics up to chapter 2, there are less problems on finals than are needed for practice for the first test, I think, and I'd ask slightly more in-depth questions on the first test dealing with first order equations. So in addition to these problems, be sure to go over the HW and quizzes we've done in class.

Also note that I may ask bonus problems on other material from chapter 3.

Test 2 Review

Go here to access the finals mentioned.

  • Sp 2005: 1, 3, 7 (L), 10(a) (R), 10(b)
  • Fa 2005: 1 (B), 4(b) (L), 5 (R) (and find the Wronskian), 6, 9, 12, 13(a) (B), 13(b)
  • Sp 2006: 4, 5 (R), 10, 11 (L), 12, 14
  • Fa 2006: 4, 9, 11 (R), 12(b) (ignore the singular points part)
  • Sp 2011: 2(b), 3(a) (R), 3(b), 6, 7 (B), 8(a), 8(b) (L)
  • Fa 2011: 2(b) (R), 3(a) (B), 3(b), 6, 7 (B), 8(a), 8(b) (L)

Again, study the quizzes and homeworks we've had so far, and know your forms and algorithms! I may also put a problem from section 3.8 in the bonus section.

KEY:

  • (R) = I'll give you one homogeneous solution and ask you to find a second using Reduction of Order

  • (L) = Do NOT use the Laplace transform, but rather a technique from chapter 3

  • (B) = A problem of this type may show up as a bonus problem

Test 3 Review

Go here to access the finals mentioned, and do the indicated problems.

  • Sp 2005: 5, 9, 10.
  • Fa 2005: 1, 4, 5, 7, 10, 13.
  • Sp 2006: 5, 6, 10 (*), 13.
  • Fa 2006: 6, 10, 11, 12(b).
  • Sp 2011: 3(a), 4, 7, 9.
  • Fa 2011: 2(b), 3(a), 4, 7, 9.

(*) - Do not use reduction of order! And pretend that you were NOT given one solution.

For bonus: you can attempt some of the problems from the Test 4 review. Laplace Transforms, in particular.

Test 4 Review

Go here to access the finals mentioned.

  • Sp 2005: 6, 7, 8.
  • Fa 2005: 3, 11.
  • Sp 2006: 7, 8, 11.
  • Fa 2006: 2(b), 5, 7.
  • Sp 2011: 8(b), 10.
  • Fa 2011: 8(b), 10.

For bonus: problems may be asked from any topic done throughout the semester.
