Grading

  • Quizzes: 25%
  • Midterm: 25%
  • Group Work: 10%
  • Final: 40%

Homework, Quizzes, and Exams

  • Homework will be assigned but not graded. Problem sets are listed below.
  • The last 30 minutes of Thursday classes will be allocated to group work. You will be split into small random groups and asked to work together on a problem. You need to submit your collaborative solution by the end of the class. It will be graded and all students in each group receive the same score. The average you receive on group assignments counts as 10% of your overall grade.
  • Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class on Tuesday every two weeks. The problems will not be simply HW problems, but will test your conceptual understanding of the material. Each quiz will appear in the Content area on Blackboard and will become available at 6pm on on the day it is given. There are no make-up quizzes. To address extraordinary circumstances that lead to missing or performing poorly on a quiz, the lowest quiz score will be dropped.
  • There will be one take-home midterm exam in the middle of the term. You will be asked to submit a pdf file with your solutions by a certain deadline. I will return your graded tests to you by email.
  • The final exam will be also a take-home test. It will become available to you at the beginning of the finals week. You have to submit a pdf file with your solutions by the posted deadline.

Attendance

Attendance is mandatory. Missing more than 4 classes will result in a reduction of your final score by 5%. Exceptions could be made only if proper documentation regarding the circumstances is provided.
